Title: A New Road
Teacher: Mrs. Stanton
Theme: Education
Materials and techniques: Acrylic paint and fabric collage.
Did you enjoy this project? Yes, it was a new experience for me because it was my first mixed media piece with paint and collage. I really enjoyed it.
About: Education can be almost synonymous with freedom because restricting somebody from reaching their full potential through learning can be equivalent to enslaving them. This piece focuses on the need for us to learn about history, as well as to learn from it, and to use and expand that knowledge to follow a new road towards freedom. A New Road centers on a boy learning from and remembering his past, and preparing to step out of the shadows that follow him and into the light.

Title: Moonlight
Teacher: Mrs. Stanton
Theme: Shackles to Scholars
Materials and techniques: Acrylic for the majority of the piece and cloth, needle and thread for the stars and moon, which are sown into the canvas.
Did you enjoy this project? Yes, it was very fun!
About: My artwork depicts a slave ship on the horizon, lit by the light of the moon and surrounded by the landscape of Harper’s Ferry. The moonlight reflected on the water represents the path to knowledge and enlightenment, while the slave ship represents the past that is being put behind.
