Title: Smoke and Ashes
Teacher: Mr. Edwards
Theme: Imagination
Materials and techniques: Acrylic paint, graphite, and cotton balls.
Did you enjoy this project? Yes, very much so. It was overall very enjoyable to do.
About: We took the idea of the destruction that Harpers Ferry had been through, and the fact that even today it still remains a very iconic place in time and history. “From ashes.”

Title: Untitled
Teacher: Mrs. Payne
Theme: Education
Materials and techniques: We used paint, stencils and a black marker to create this artwork. We paid attention to positive and negative space and the upside down scholar was placed to create an interesting negative space path.
Did you enjoy this project? I liked it because we got to be creative.
About: We picked this theme because education is a valuable step to becoming a powerful member of society. We chose the symbol of the scholar to represent the major path to becoming a scholar. We included the seal to make this composition specific to Harper’s Ferry.

Title: Breaking Free
Teacher: Mrs. Payne
Theme: Freedom
Materials and techniques: We used paint. We used our fingers layering patterns and cut out stencils for the images.
Did you enjoy this project? This isn’t my favorite style of painting but I enjoyed the process.
About: The theme of freedom relates to us because we are already free. We included the silhouette of John Brown, birds, and a birdcage and slaves. We used the birdcage and birds to symbolize the freeing of the slaves. We included John Brown because it was his acts that started the country in the direction of fighting to free the slaves. We chose to place the dark colors on the bottom of the composition and the lighter colors on the top with the images on the darker half representing the darker part of our history and the lighter part, freedom and what we fought for.

Title: A Path to Freedom
Teacher: Mrs. Payne
Theme: Freedom
Materials and techniques: We used traditional paintbrushes and miscellaneous objects to create our painting. We painted patterns in order to create depth in layers of paint and visual curiosity.
Did you enjoy this project? Yes! My favorite part was the first two layers, the process allowed us to make our figures stand out and not be flat.
About: One of our team members liked the theme of freedom, and we all agreed to work with that one. We googled images of freedom and they were all about people with their arms out so we created a design with that type of image. During a class discussion a comment was made that our picture looked like a quilt square and someone shared that directions for the Underground Railroad would be hidden in quilt designs. From that discussion we decided to add the North Star and Big Dipper constellation, as seen in the different seasons, symbolizing a path to freedom.

Title: A Brutal End
Teacher: Mrs. Payne
Theme: Civil War
Materials and techniques: We layered paint and maps to create our composition. We made different marks with color to create a chaotic atmosphere that would communicate the intensity of war. We made an overlay of gray and included the contours of the Gettysburg memorial indicating the end of war.
Did you enjoy this project? We enjoyed working on this project. We enjoyed designing the composition and the spontaneous and varied ideas that made it come about.
About: We chose the Civil War because it was a major catalyst in American History that happened really close to where we live.
